In this day and age, we have an urge to constantly be busy, putting our energy in to something useful otherwise we feel we won’t achieve anything. To some extent it’s true – non-stop pushing yourself may give some measure of success. Making yourself the top priority is hard when you have seemingly endless to-do list of chores, answering emails, taking care of kids, seeing family, work priorities… busy, busy, busy.
In most cases, working yourself too hard for large periods of time will impact on you negatively. Stress combined with the inability to just sit and enjoy our own company can lead to serious health risks and potentially even psychological effects. Health risks can include things like heart attacks, strokes, asthma, obesity, headaches, even premature deaths. Mentally, you may experience mental fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, depression and increased irritability. It’s important to get your head down for a good night’s rest and equally important to give yourself some time out.
With the on-the-go, busy lifestyle, it can almost go unnoticed that you’ve forgotten about yourself. But, with these 3 reasons to schedule yourself some ‘me time’, you’ll realise the benefits and hopefully start giving yourself some of that all-important alone time.
- It will recharge your mind and body.
Is all of this stressful work causing you to feel increasingly tired? You need a break from the same old mundane tasks and stress. When you’re feeling a little sluggish all you need to do is give yourself some time to recharge yourself. Your ‘me time’ can be spent doing anything you wish, whether it’s reading a book, getting your nails done or even a little bit of retail therapy. Slowing down and allowing your body to recharge will increase your productivity as you won’t be so stressed all the time.
- It allows better focus.
Relaxing is the best way to regain focus. Giving yourself a break from your work allows your mind to process the information and rejuvenate; ready for work again the next day with a clear mind. People are so focused on being focused that they forget all the stress they’re trying to juggle is actually impacting on their focus. Focusing on you in the present will enable your future self to concentrate even better on tasks/ projects.
- You’ll love discovering yourself.
‘Me time’ allows you to find something to set your mind on, through spending more time with yourself you’re bound to find out things that you didn’t know before. Whether it’s a creative hobby you’d never tried before, a new skill or just a nice stress-free activity, it allows you to embrace your creative side and feel a sense of accomplishment.
When you treat yourself well, it has a positive influence on everything you do. You’ll feel more at one with yourself, you might even know yourself 10 x better than before. But how do you know until you try?
